How to write the best curriculum vitae:
The dimensions:
Usually, for the United States, they are 8.5 × 11 cm, while for Europe they are 21 × 29.7 cm.
The format:
Usually, a .doc format is the best format for a CV, unless the agency you are interested in requires a different one. In most cases, the .doc format is preferred because ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is often used in agencies. This software analyzes automatically each CV, this is why it’s important to have a perfect scannable curriculum.
The keywords:
In order to be scanned by an ATS, your curriculum must include the keywords from the job advertisement you are interested in. You will be discarded immediately if you do not have the right keywords, so be careful in choosing the best keywords. To make this easier, you can try some software that finds keywords for you, such as Jobscan.
The length:
You should not exceed two pages in length, if you have a lot to say, try to be concise and focus on the position you are applying for.
The font:
Use a classic font to make it easier for the ATS to read it like Arial or Calibri.
Where to write the CV:
You can create your curriculum with Word or with free online tools like Cvmarker or Resume Genius.
The structure:
-At the top of the page you should add your contact information (Your name, number, email, Linkedin profile if you have one, and/or your personal website)
-Your photo is facultative unless required. The photo should be at least HD and professional.
-For the introduction, you have two choices: adding a CV objective or a CV summary.
The CV objective summarizes your work experiences, skills, and qualifications.
The CV summary highlights the most important achievements in your career, so this is why usually only people with a high-powered career use this type of introduction.
-Then add your work experiences in detail. For each job you have to add the name of the company you worked for, your job title or position, the date of start, and of the end. You should then list all the work you have done for the company and what you have accomplished.
-Now add your education section. Add the name of your school and/or university, the date of start and of end, and your degree, or degrees if you have more than one.
-Then you should write your hard skills, I recommend you to focus on the skills needed for the job role you are applying to. Just right under that add your soft skills, and if you like, also some of your hobbies.
-Then we have the language section where you need to list all the languages you speak and what level of proficiency you have for each of them.
How to find job advertisements:
There are plenty of sites that are full of agencies that are searching for someone new to add to their team.
On Linkedin, which is a professional social network, you can find new job advertisements every day. You can apply, or contact the company directly, but consider also filling out your Linkedin profile, so you will stand out more. If you select the option in the Linkedin settings, you can even receive everyday email alerts for newly published job advertising.
Indeed is the largest job website in the whole world. Here you won’t have a personal profile but you can reach out to the agency you want to work with or search based on the job role you want to adopt. You don’t even need to create an account, but if you do, you will also receive email alerts for new jobs.
Glassdoor is also a very big website that has been around for many years. You can have your personal profile like on Linkedin, upload your CV and sign up for email alerts.
Flexjobs is perfect for people who want to work from home. It’s the bigger site for remote working. Unfortunately is not free and it costs around 9 dollars per week, but if you are struggling to find a remote job I think the cost it’s worth it.
